After 25 years and 22 (non-COVID) rides, Sydney to Surfers no longer viable

10 Jul 2023

After 25 years and 22 (non-COVID) rides, the organising committee made the difficult decision that it is no longer viable for Engadine Rotary to continue to stage such a large undertaking given increasingly onerous official requirements and the demands on limited volunteer resources.

The ride was originally the brainchild of Rotarian Ken "Robbo" Robinson who saw an opportunity to support Father Chris Riley from Engadine Boystown in his efforts to establish outreach services to help vulnerable young people on the streets of Sydney.

Who could have foreseen then that the first ride in 1999 would grow to become Australia's premier long distance charity cycle tour. Many participants returned year after year to support the cause and share the highs and lows of the 1,000 kilometre journey with other riders, volunteers, the YOTS team and most importantly, some very inspiring young people.

Apart from the obvious financial support, the ride saw over 100 young people from Youth Off The Streets Cycle Of Courage program participate and achieve more than they thought possible. We're incredibly gratified to know that the ride has had a direct positive impact on those lives and raised an incredible $3.9 million for Youth Off The Streets.

See below links to watch the video footage of our FIVE Cycle Of Courage students – Zac, Mia, Josh, Jonny, Jamie and graduate student Liam Irons who participated in this year’s 2023 Sydney To Surfers charity ride.

Parramatta Cycling Club is a proud supporter of the Youth off The Streets Cycling Program with our training program held at Merrylands Oval on Monday evenings.
