A social riding weekend - Canberra in April

25 Feb 2024

Parramatta Cycling Club is on the road. We're having a social, extended weekend in Canberra. This will be an opportunity to see the sights and ride the many scenic paths in and around the capital.

 Dates:

Saturday 13 April to Tuesday 16 April.

We're flexible at both ends - you may wish to go down Friday night after work, or to stay on.

 In Canberra:

The weather will be cooling with the leaves starting to change colour, and the days will still be pleasant. A lovely time.

 Rides:

We'll come up with a selection to match our participants, which may include:

  • Lake Burley Griffin circuit
  • Rides out to Belconnen, Gungahlin, and Woden
  • A mountain stage of Black Mountain and Mt Ainslie
  • Some longer road trips - perhaps to Tidbinbilla and Bungendore

 And more:

We're not just for riders. We welcome your families and friends, and we're deliberately basing ourselves near a number of attractions that includes the National Gallery, Questacon, Parliament Houses (new and old) and the Old Bus Depot Markets.  If you think you "might perhaps" be up for a very gentle roll, there's the shortest lake circuit (7km), or a tour through the embassy district.

 Accommodation:

We'll base ourselves and start our rides in Manuka/Kingston, on the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin. This central area has great access to attractions and paths, to local shops, and to many food options including some pubs (where we can catch up for dinner).

You book your own accommodation - prices and availability are pretty good, as at late February. Some suggested hotels (with indicative cost for a double room as per Booking.com) are:

(a) Between Manuka and Kingston (the ideal location - there are several serviced apartment hotels in this area)

(b) On the Manuka side (best for walking into Parliamentary Triangle)

  • Rydges Canberra, Cnr Canberra Ave & National Cct, Forrest, 2603 $210/night. It's a new Rydges
  • Forrest Hotel & Apartments, 30 National Circuit Forrest ACT 2603 $135/night. Smaller rooms and older place, but very serviceable.

(c) Closer to Kingston (walkable to Kingston)

  • Ramada Diplomat, Cnr Canberra Ave & Hely St, Griffith, 2603, $170 a night. A little further out for a good price

Cost

There's no cost to participate. You pay your own expenses.
