2016 NSW Masters Championship

02 May 2016

A number of Parramatta masters riders current & ex descended on Orange for this years masters titles. We even had the club president Paul waving the flag. It was a great weekend with lots of the wives and kids coming up to enjoy Orange and surrounding districts.

The road race was Saturday. We were represented in Masters 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7

The young guys had 4 laps of the older blokes 3 laps then 2 of the 29km course. The course was typical country roads, with a killer 16% climb before the finish line. I want to be in charge of designing a course one time. I just need to find an ironing board big enough!!!!

I was in the first race of the day and driving out from Orange to Molong in the dark with the rain falling wasn’t a good sign. I found a nice spot 100m from the start line under a shop awning, so I could do my warm up without getting rained on. Thankfully the rain eased before the race started although the roads were still very wet.

The race was neutral for the first 1.5km which included Hill St (it should have been called mountain street). A few more turns and the race start flag dropped and were off out of town and across the rail line. A few km out of town the road had been resurfaced in true all weather fashion no smooth bitumen on this section. I was hoping that being early morning there wouldn’t be any wind, but that wasn’t the case, when we turned onto Garra Rd it was in our faces. We had some relatively flat section before the up hill. 1-2% at first rising to 4% before a quick downhill and a killer 16% section. At the top I was off the back but managed to get on again. Another lap and I stayed with them, but on the final lap I nearly stopped up the 16% section but hung on for 17th, John Cooper worked his ass of and got 8th, congrats John, Pete Vidler finished a valiant 25th.

The guys who started behind us had better weather and later in the day the wind subsided.

That night at dinner the tales of the days hardships seemed to get taller as the beer & wines flowed.

Also up at Orange & dinner were guys and girls who regularly ride with us on a Saturday, Simon Ball, Matt Smithson (3rd M3)& Clare Harden who won the women’s masters 1 road race, good on you Clare!!!

Sunday was the criterium  a 1.67km loop around an industrial area. The course was fast with nice sweeping turns.

The road was wet in the morning and there was a fall in on of the earlier races.

By the time Michael started in the M7, the road had dried out. Michael stayed with the lead group.

In my race 3 went of the front on the second lap never to be seen again. Then another 3 followed 2 of whom we never saw again.

While we had gone back to Orange for a well deserved lunch, Kevin held the PCC mantle high getting 2nd in his race. Bloody well done. Brian must have suffered from a puncture tyre, lung or leg. We’ll get a full rundown later or maybe not!!

All in all it was a great weekend, Congratulations to all who participated, it was a great weekend. Next year we might have more for the racing and weekend.
